The Washing of Feet

Scripture: John 13:1-17

Now it was the feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that the hour had come when He should depart from this world to the Father.  And when the meal (Last Supper) was ended, He rose and laid aside his outer garments, and took a towel and wrapped it about Him.  After that He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet and to wipe them with the towel.  After He had washed their feet, and had taken his garments and sat down again, He said to them, “Do you know what I have done to you.  And a new commandment I give you now, that as I have loved you, so you shall also love one another.”
Only in the book of John, Jesus performs a simple act of feet washing with his disciples during His last few hours on earth. It reveals not only His true character but the character He wants all believers to develop. One of humility and servanthood.

Point to Ponder:
  • Can we give something or someone due respect—even exalted respect—without lauding it for its superior qualities?

Prayer: Father, our heart cries out in joy at Your wondrous gift and in sorrow at Your wrenching sacrifice.
